Tunisia is preparing to receive 9 million tourists
Tunisia represented the first destination for tourists from France, Germany and England, in addition to attracting high reservations from Eastern European countries.
With the start of the 2023 summer tourism season, Tunisia hopes to attract more than 9 million tourists and restore tourism indicators for the period before the Corona pandemic in 2019.
The country, which is suffering from stifling economic crises, relies on the tourism sector to support its economy and raise its hard currency revenues.
Eastern European countries
The head of the Tunisian Federation of Travel Agencies, Ahmed Bellatif, confirmed that Tunisia has recovered more than 30 percent of the reservations of its traditional markets.
Tunisia represented the first destination for tourists from France, Germany and England, in addition to attracting high reservations from Eastern European countries.
Djerba Island
Latif stated that the island of Djerba is the most popular destination for European tourists, followed by the cities of Sousse and Monastir, then Hammamet, Mahdia and the Gammarth region of the capital.
The head of the University of Travel Agencies said, "The indicators registered until mid-May herald an excellent tourist season that surpasses the 2019 tourism season, that is, before the Corona pandemic."
Diversify the tourism product
He pointed out that tourism workers are advised of the upward pattern of reservations, which continues after the summer until November 15, recording a new privilege for the sector that the tourist season is no longer limited to the summer months only.
Bellatif pointed out that Tunisia has been working in the last three years to diversify the tourism product and not be limited to beach tourism by developing cultural, marine and desert tourism services, which still need more time to promote.
Revenues of the tourism sector
It is noteworthy that the revenues of the tourism sector in Tunisia during the first quarter of this year exceeded one billion dinars (about 326.7 million dollars), according to data issued by the Central Bank.
Tunisian tourism records a 60 percent growth in revenues compared to the same period last year, which witnessed the influx of 6.4 million tourists, with revenues of 4.2 billion Tunisian dinars.
Economists considered it evidence of the beginning of the recovery of tourism after difficult years left by the Corona epidemic crisis, exacerbated by the war in Ukraine, which caused Tunisia to lose half a million Russian tourists.
He added that the tourist indicators recorded in Tunisia after the incident in the synagogue in Djerba confirm that there are no cancellations of hotel reservations and travel agencies in various tourist cities.
On May 9, the island of Djerba, the most prominent tourist resort in southern Tunisia, witnessed a criminal incident that targeted a synagogue, leaving dead and injured.
