Egypt aims for 10% of the revenues from global medical tourism

The official spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population, Hossam Abdel Ghafar, said that Egypt intends to launch an electronic platform to provide medical tourism services within 3 months.

Abdel Ghaffar added, today, Monday, December 18, 2023, to "Al-Arabiya Business" that Egypt aims to be in the "first five ranks among the most welcoming countries for medical tourism in the world, and to receive 10% of the revenues of global medical tourism".

Dollar returns

Abdel Ghaffar did not clearly disclose the dollar returns targeted for Egypt from medical tourism, demanding "Arab Business" to calculate the percentage of 10% of the total global returns for medical tourism.

At the end of last July, the head of the General Authority for Health Care and general supervisor of the comprehensive health insurance project at the Ministry of Health and Population in Egypt, Ahmed Al-Sabki, estimated the size of the medical tourism market in the world at 115 billion dollars per year.

And according to the estimates of the Egyptian Ministry of Health for the size of the medical tourism market in the world, the returns targeted by Egypt reach 11.5 billion dollars annually.

Egypt is eligible

Egypt achieved tourism revenues exceeding 12.2 billion dollars in 2022, and aims to increase it to 14 billion by the end of this year, according to the estimates of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism.

A few days ago, the Egyptian Minister of Health and Population, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghafar, directed the Supreme Committee for Medical Tourism in his country to quickly complete the electronic platform for the medical tourism system, and to work with all sectors of the state to improve the level of medical tourism services.

The minister said, in a statement, that Egypt is qualified to receive this type of medical tourism, as it has qualified health facilities and distinguished doctors, and also has an ambitious plan and vision to be on the international map in medical tourism.

The Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Ahmed Issa, has confirmed that the Egyptian state aims to achieve rapid growth in the tourism industry in Egypt, with rates ranging from 25% to 30% annually, in view of expectations that global growth rates will witness a relative slowdown until they return to their normal rates.

Which means achieving growth in the market share for Egypt in an accelerated manner by making access to the Egyptian tourist destination more accessible and doubling the number of flight seats to Egypt; and working to encourage and improve the investment climate; and improving the tourist experience in the Egyptian tourist destination.
