Interest rates on treasury bills are approaching 26%.. How do you invest in them?

The Central Bank offered government debt instruments, “treasury bills” with maturities of 6 months and one year, today, Thursday, 10-12-2023, with a value of 46 billion and 500 thousand pounds, and it intends to offer maturities of 3 months and 9 months next Sunday, with a total value of 47 billion and 500 thousand pounds.

The Ministry of Finance entrusts the Central Bank with the task of offering and managing bids for government debt instruments to direct the proceeds to the sections of the state’s general budget, which wages, support and social protection.

According to the official website of the Central Bank of Egypt, the total value of treasury bills today, Thursday and next Sunday, will be 94 billion pounds, distributed as follows.

Thursday 10-12-2023 

- 6-month treasury bills, worth 19,500 billion pounds. 

- One-year treasury bills worth 27 billion pounds.

Sunday 10-15-2023 

- 3 month treasury bills worth 22,500 billion pounds. 

- Treasury bills with a maturity of 9 months’ worth 25 billion pounds.

In the bids submitted, banks and companies requested treasury bills for a return of up to 29,000%, while the Central Bank agreed to an average return of up to 25,990%.

Egyptian treasury bills

It is noteworthy that Egyptian treasury bills are considered short-term debt instruments, offered by the Ministry of Finance and entrusting the Central Bank of Egypt to implement and manage the offering, twice a week, in order to collect proceeds that go toward spending on the state’s general budget, in exchange for a rewarding return paid in advance to the holders of these bills.

How to invest in treasury bills 

If a person wishes to invest in Egyptian treasury bills, we will review the following steps:

- The customer must first deposit an amount of 25 thousand pounds or its multiples 50 - 75 - 100 - 125...etc., for example, in the National Bank of Egypt.

- After this stage, he submits a request to customer service to subscribe for Egyptian treasury bills, choosing between: 3, 6, 9 months or one year.

- After receiving your request from the bank, it submits subscription offers to the Central Bank of Egypt, twice a week, and if the latter approves, the return is disbursed in advance on the immediate next day.
