Hard currency enters Egypt after topped list of countries producing renewable energy

Egypt seeks to increase the electric energy produced, which would contribute to the sustainable growth of the national economy, as energy is an essential element in development, whether agricultural, industrial or tourism, which contributes to increasing Egyptian exports, as well as contributing to the manufacture of hydrogen and green ammonia for use as fuel and exported to global markets.

The climate conference held in the city during the period from 6 to 18 November highlighted that Egypt leads the African countries in energy production, as it is one of the largest producers of renewable energy in Africa since 2010.

Egypt leads the African countries in the production of renewable energy since 2010

The Information and Decision Support Center in the Council of Ministers confirmed that Egypt occupies the second largest country in solar energy production in Africa, and the third largest in wind power generation in Africa during 2020.

The information center shed light on the Egyptian efforts to switch to clean energy, as it increased its capabilities in the production of solar and wind energy, and benefited greatly from the good use of renewable energy investments it received, during the period (2010-2020).

$8.2 billion in energy investments received by Egypt

He pointed out that the volume of energy investments received by Egypt during the period from 2010-2020 amounted to $8.2 billion, as a result of Egypt's ability to generate solar energy, which amounted to 1,680 megawatts, and the volume of Egypt's wind production reached about 1,380 megawatts.

He pointed out that 75% of investments in renewable energy sources for Africa are based on four countries, including Egypt, during the period from 2010-2020, noting that the Benban plant in Aswan is the fourth largest solar power plant in the world.

Signing agreements with Egypt to produce clean energy

The Egyptian government signed several agreements and memoranda of understanding to establish projects for the production of renewable energy from wind and solar, in addition to establishing factories for the production of green hydrogen, on the sidelines of Egypt's hosting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP 27), held in Sharm El-Sheikh.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, accompanied by the Prime Minister of Norway, launched the trial operation of the first phase of the green hydrogen plant with a capacity of 100 megawatts, in the industrial zone of Sukhna, affiliated to the economic zone of the Suez Canal; To produce 15 thousand tons of green hydrogen as a feedstock for the production of up to 90 thousand tons of green ammonia annually.

Egypt also signed 3 agreements and memoranda of understanding to establish 3 major projects to produce wind energy with a total capacity of 5 GW, representing about half of the electricity production capacity of 59.5 GW, and more than 7 times the total capacity of renewable energy of 3.5 GW, according to government data.
