$ 7billion..A deal between America and Iran regarding the prisoners
A deal between America and Iran for the release of prisoners
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir - Abadullahian said that Iran and the United States have reached an agreement to exchange prisoners.
According to Reuters, Washington denied this and described it as a "false" claim from Tehran.
Prisoner exchange crisis
The Iranian foreign minister added, "We reached an agreement in recent days, and if things go well with the American side, we will witness the exchange of prisoners in a short period."
"From our side, everything is ready, while the United States is currently working on the final technical coordination," he continued.
Washington replied
A White House official denied Amir - Abadullahian's statement about a prisoner exchange with Washington, adding that the United States is committed to securing the release of Americans detained in Iran.
A White House National Security Council spokesman said, "Iranian officials' claims that we reached an agreement for the release of US citizens detained by Iran are wrong."
countries participating in the negotiations
Iranian sources told Reuters that two countries in the region are participating in a series of indirect talks between Tehran and Washington to release prisoners.
For years, Tehran has sought the release of more than a dozen Iranians in the United States, including seven Iranian-Americans with dual citizenship, two Iranians with permanent residents in the United States, and four Iranian citizens without legal status in the United States.
Rights activists have accused the Islamic Republic, which holds dozens of Iranians with dual nationalities and foreigners, of arresting them in an attempt to extract concessions from other countries. Iran rejected the accusation.
$ 7billion
Some Iranian media reported last week that Iran had reached a prisoner exchange deal in exchange for the release of $7 billion in Iranian oil money frozen under US sanctions in South Korea.
In 2018, then-U.S. president Donald Trump ditched a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six powers and reimposed sanctions that have crippled the Islamic Republic's economy.
The deal imposed restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for lifting international sanctions. In reaction to Washington's sanctions, Tehran has gradually violated curbs of the pact on its nuclear programme.
Indirect talks between Tehran and President Joe Biden's administration on reviving the agreement have stalled since September. The deal imposed restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for lifting international sanctions.
prisoners in Iran
Siamak Namazi, a businessman with dual US-Iranian citizenship, is one of the Americans detained in Iran, and was sentenced in 2016 to 10 years in prison on charges of espionage and collaboration with the US government.
Imad Sharghi, an Iranian-American businessman who was arrested for the first time in 2018 when he was working for a technology investment company, is also imprisoned in Iran, as is Iranian-American environmentalist Morad Tahbaz, who also holds British citizenship.
