Who leads the "Cop 28" summit in the Emirates... Details
The CEO of the African Chamber of Energy, NG Ayuk, stressed support for Al-Jaber's selection as chair of the conference, pointing out that the UAE's Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology calls for a more realistic approach to protecting the world from climate change.
There is no doubt that the transition towards a green economy costs a lot, and at a time when the world is experiencing financial instability, this can be a daunting truth.
However, the natural ebb and flow of the global economy should not push us away from achieving climate goals, such as the UAE's strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, according to the "The National" website.
Climate challenges
According to the Emirati website, “time is not on our side” with regard to climate challenges. Therefore, it is necessary to take advantage of the unique platform of COP28 to be held in Dubai in November 2023 to deal with this challenge and transform climate goals into measurable actions.
International officials have expressed their confidence in the success of the UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, in leading the climate summit negotiations.
In January 2023, the UAE decided to assign Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, the UAE's Special Envoy for Climate Change, as appointed chairperson of the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), which will start in Dubai next November.
Ensure the success of COP28
Commenting on Sultan Al Jaber's appointment at an environmental technology conference, UK Secretary of State for Energy Security Graham Stewart said: "I think he is outstanding and we look forward to working with the UAE to ensure COP28 is a success, and get more countries to commit to the necessary emissions reductions."
Stewart praised, according to the BBC, Sultan Al Jaber's work at the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), saying he was cleaning up its operations and reducing emissions.
Important and positive results
China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Zhang Jun, affirmed his country's support to the UAE in hosting the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), which will be held at Expo City in Dubai.
Speaking during an open session of the UN Security Council, Zhang said he expects the COP28 led by Sultan Al-Jaber will achieve important and positive results.
He added that the UN Security Council must align its mission, agenda, resources and tools with the specific circumstances and needs of each country, so that it can understand how climate change affects security, as well as focus on solving problems and finding their main causes. and security risks, and propose effective ways to deal with them.
Underfunding
Zhang urged UN agencies to set up a mechanism to monitor climate-related financial pledges and encourage developed countries to keep their promises. He noted that the main challenge facing global climate action is the lack of funding.
He noted that China is ready to work with all parties to promote a fair and equitable international environmental governance system and to promote cooperation in the common interests of all.
Africa praises Sultan Al Jaber
The CEO of the African Chamber of Energy, NG Ayuk, stressed support for Al-Jaber's selection as chair of the conference, pointing out that the UAE's Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology calls for a more realistic approach to protecting the world from climate change.
In Ayouk's opinion, Al-Jaber "calls for an approach that does not exacerbate energy poverty and impede economic growth, as well as an ultimate goal of curbing emissions." Ayuk concluded, “Al-Jaber is a good man and a friend of Africa. I am sure he is an excellent choice to lead COP28.”
