The United States is Egypt's second largest trading partner after China, with a total trade volume of $9.1 billion in 2021.

This percentage represents 2.4% of Egypt's GDP in the fiscal year 2020/2021 and 7% of the Middle East, North Africa and the United States.

Largest business partner

Data from the American Chamber of Commerce in Cairo revealed that Egypt is one of the largest trading partners of the United States, ranking fourth as the largest trading partner by volume in the Middle East and the largest in Africa in 2020.

  Egypt also accounted for 5% of the total exports of the Middle East and North Africa region to the United States in 2021, and 9% of the region's imports from the United States.

Decrease in the Egyptian trade deficit

For the United States, Egypt ranked as its 50th largest trading partner by volume in 2021.

Egypt's trade deficit with America decreased slightly by 4% in 2021 to $2.5 billion (from $2.6 billion in 2020).

Egyptian exports to the United States

Egyptian exports to the US grew by 50% year-on-year to reach $3.3 billion, with petroleum exports increasing by 60% year-on-year to $773.9 million.

Total Middle East and North Africa trade with the United States grew by 28% to $122.6 billion, compared to $95.7 billion in 2020, and Egypt still recorded the fourth largest trade volume with the United States during 2021, after Israel, Saudi Arabia and the UAE

Clothing is at the top of the list of exports

The data showed that the bulk of Egypt's exports to the United States are textiles and clothing, as it constituted 45% of the total export basket and amounted to $1.1 billion in 2021.

 While the other largest exports were iron and steel products, which increased by 54% from the previous year to $173.5 million.

Plastic product exports also grew by 109% year-on-year to reach $173.2 million, which represents 7% of the export basket for 2021.

Fertilizers also saw a significant increase of 125% in 2021.

  On the other hand, exports of tobacco products and glass decreased by 89% and 14%, respectively, to $42.2 million and $50 million.
