Abydos in Sohag Governorate was the capital of the eighth district in Upper Egypt. In the area near Umm al-Qa’ab, there are tombs of a number of pre-dynastic kings, including the tomb of King Djer, which was later believed, starting from the Middle Kingdom, at least to be the tomb of Osiris.
Although the original deity of Abydos was Khente Amentio, to whom the oldest temple in the region was dedicated, He was soon associated with Osiris, and Osiris' religion took over his religion, according to tradition, the head of this god was buried in Abydos, after Set cut his body into pieces that were scattered all over Egypt. This head represents the emblem of the city, but wearing the crown of Osiris with two feathers.
