An international consortium with German participation signed an agreement with the Mauritanian government on a $34 billion green hydrogen project with an electrolyser capacity of 10 gigawatts.

  8 million tons of ammonia 

The German company involved, Conjuncta, was quoted by the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" (FAZ) on Wednesday as saying that the project would have a production capacity of 8 million tons of ammonia or other hydrogen-based end products per year.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung said that the first phase of the project, which will be located northeast of the coastal capital Nouakchott in West Africa, should be completed in 2028 with a planned capacity of 400 megawatts. Infinity Energy Company of Egypt and Masdar of the United Arab Emirates also participated in the project.

On the other hand, The Egyptian energy company, Infinity, announced, Wednesday, the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the German companies, Connecta, and the Emirati Company, Masdar, stipulating the start of developing a green hydrogen production project in Mauritania with investments amounting to $34 billion.

The company stated in a joint statement that the targeted project is expected to have a total production capacity of about 8 million tons per year of green hydrogen, in addition to an electrolysis facility with a production capacity of up to 10 gigawatts.

 According to Reuters, the CEO of the German company, Stefan Liebing, said that the project is an important leap in the field of renewable energy in Mauritania, and it also strengthens the joint relations between the two countries.

He explained that his company's participation in the green hydrogen production project in Mauritania comes as part of Germany's efforts aimed at enhancing its capacity to produce renewable energy, as compensation for Russian fuel imports affected by the sanctions.
