Mita announced, in a statement on its official website, the early launch of the “WhatsApp Channels” feature in Egypt, through which users will be able to enter groups for individuals and institutions that interest them. Such as football clubs or community organizations and well-known people, and the channels will be accessed through a new tab called “Updates” separate from regular chats, and users will be able to follow the channels easily, according to Wabetainfo.

Meta stated, in its official statement, that it aspires for the “WhatsApp Channels” feature to be the most private “broadcast messaging” product available to millions of Egyptians. Pointing out that this new feature is a new, simple, reliable, and private way to receive important updates from people and organizations directly within the WhatsApp application, and it will also become an optional new feature and will be separate from private chats for users.

Extreme privacy in “WhatsApp channels”

Regarding the extreme privacy that “WhatsApp channels” will characterize, the “Meta” company pointed out that it will come with the strong privacy protection that the user expects from WhatsApp, and it will also preserve the user’s choice; Administrators will not be able to add followers to their channel.

The channel's history will be stored on Meta's servers for only 30 days, and it will appear in a new "Updates" tab, separate from the user's chat with family, friends, and communities, and it will be a one-way broadcast tool for admins to send texts, photos, videos, stickers, and polls.

Joint work with the public and private sectors in Egypt

In its statement, Meta indicated that the launch of “WhatsApp channels” in Egypt came through joint work with a group of sectors and industries in Egypt, including government bodies such as the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and media partners such as the United Media Services Company and Al-Ahly Sports Club.

The “Meta” company previously announced that the “WhatsApp Channels” feature will be available on WhatsApp in June 2023; And that the testing and learning phase began by launching the channel feature in Colombia and Singapore with local partners including the Ministry of Health in Singapore and the fact-checker Columbia Check in Colombia, as well as global partners such as the World Health Organization and Manchester City, pointing out at the time that it hopes to continue this success in Egypt, which is among the few countries that have been chosen for this second launch phase.
