Waste management at COP27 place and Sharm El Sheikh

In light of the Climate Conference (COP-27) held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, “Bee'ah Tandef”, a subsidiary of the BEEAH Group in waste collection and city cleaning, began to present Egypt at its best during the Climate Conference.

During one of the world's most significant events on climate action globally, the company presented a 10-year contract to collaborate with the coastal city of Sharm El Sheikh in partnership with Green Planet, the start-up environmental services company in Egypt.

The decade began just days before COP27 in Egypt, where more than 90 heads of state and representative delegations from the world's leading economies gathered to accelerate global climate goals.

·         Providing waste management services

BEEAH Group signed the contract with the South Sinai Governorate in Sharm El Sheikh last month, after which “Bee'ah Tandef”  Company deployed waste management infrastructure and simplified waste collection solutions in the city. COP27 The convention center has many boxes and staff to maintain cleanliness and ensure proper waste disposal.

Meet the needs of solid waste

“Bee'ah Tandef” is also working to meet the municipal solid waste needs of the entire city, innovative solar-powered, high-tech bins have been deployed at various locations in Sharm El Sheikh. Recycling stations are strategically placed to collect different types of waste, with separate streams for recyclables, e-waste, as well as organic waste and mixed waste. Waste and recycling points also serve as learning centers for local communities, informing people of appropriate waste disposal techniques and encouraging waste sorting at source.

“Bee'ah Tandef” also implements waste management and general disinfection services in many of the tourist areas in the desert and beach areas. Teams on the ground wash and inspect containers periodically while carrying out preventive maintenance. When containers are found defective or damaged, they are repaired or replaced.

·         Mechanical sweepers

In collaboration with Green Planet, “Bee'ah Tandef” has also deployed motorized sweepers, vacuum vehicles, street wash vehicles and beach cleaning vehicles. Furthermore, Ducati's mobile electric waste collection units simplify operations on main and inland roads, streets and sidewalks, providing workers shade from direct sunlight, in line with occupational health standards. The range of vehicles meets the unique environmental and infrastructure requirements of high-density areas of the city as well as public and community spaces. Skilled crew members are stationed in desert areas to collect trash and empty and transparent bins, as well as sweep streets, roads, sidewalks, parking lots, public transit points, roundabouts and paved driveways. Depending on the region, crew members use advanced waterjet vehicles, manual street wash services, and specialized safari vehicles. To drive sustainable waste management services in the future, the BEEAH Group and Green Planet will also conduct outreach activities on the ground to promote a culture of recycling and appropriate waste disposal, including through educational programs for schools, businesses and communities.

Speaking about the contract handover, Rafael Lopez said we are proud to support this with our work in Sharm El Sheikh during COP27 and the following decade. We are grateful to the wise leadership in Egypt for their bold determination, their ability to adapt to a changing environment, and their confidence in providing world-class waste management solutions. Our goal is to help Sharm El Sheikh become a sustainable and smart city in the future. Looking to the future, we will build on our existing suite of services, supporting net zero emissions and zero landfill strategies while working to achieve the key goals set by the Egyptian government.”

In line with Egypt's sustainability agenda, “Bee'ah Tandef” plans to launch several specialized services, community engagement and recycling incentive programs. One of the services will be a specialized program to collect used cooking oil, which will help reduce disposal through drains and reduce clogging of public plumbing systems.

To further encourage recycling practices, Reverse Vending Machines (RVM) will be deployed throughout the city, providing a seamless and digitally enabled experience for users to deposit recyclables such as plastic bottles. Staff will also work around the clock to collect waste and keep public areas clean. Ecosystem Solutions from “Bee'ah Tandef”>
