An Egyptian plan to make 42% of electricity from renewable energy sources

Immediately after the COP27 Climate Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt took many steps on renewable and clean energy and the Egyptian government entered into new partnerships with companies that would address the challenges of climate change.

An Egyptian plan to make 42% of electricity from renewable energy sources

In this regard, the Egyptian government has developed an ambitious plan for the country’s energy future to meet the increasing demand for energy and the requirements of climate change challenges. The Egyptian government’s integrated strategy for sustainable energy aims to ensure the stability of the country’s energy supply so that 20% of the electricity energy will come from renewable energy sources by 2022 and 42 % by 2035.

In contrast, Ayman Saad, General Manager of Siemens Gamesa Egypt, a pioneer in the field of renewable energy, said that there is great and fruitful cooperation between Siemens Gamesa and the Egyptian government in implementing this strategy, as well as providing the appropriate technology and onshore resources necessary to develop the wind energy plan in the country. The company has significantly increased its wind power generation capacity to 18% since the end of 2021.

·         The first wind farm in Egypt in 2005

He pointed out that Siemens Gamesa's presence in the Egyptian market extends for many years through its main shareholder, Siemens Energy International. During its presence in Egypt, the company delivered the first wind farms in Egypt in 2005 to contribute with a capacity of 1.5 gigawatts and a market share of 91% of wind energy in Egypt currently. .

Saad affirmed the company's commitment to continue supporting the Egyptian government as a strategic partner in its plan to move towards reliance on sustainable clean energy within its sustainable development plan Egypt 2030, as the Egyptian market is the largest and fastest developing in terms of opportunities available in Africa.

He explained that the company is working on developing its local network of suppliers and contractors, while encouraging the positive social and environmental impact in Egypt, which will be reflected in serving the development goals in Egypt.

·         Public-Private Partnerships

The General Manager of Siemens Gamesa Egypt indicated that the Egyptian government has strengthened partnerships between the public and private sectors, especially during the last five years, which resulted in the establishment of two wind farms developed by private companies for the first time, by attracting more and more international investors.

He praised the efforts of the Egyptian state in accelerating the transition to clean energy, at a time when the global wind energy industry is currently facing great financial pressures, as it suffers from intense competition, price pressures and the huge increase in the costs of raw materials and logistics services.

·         Company Achievements

Public-private partnerships have an important role in uniting efforts to address the risks currently facing the world, but the company completed, during 2020, the installation of 96 wind turbines in the wind farm in the West Bakr area of Ras Gharib with a capacity of 250 megawatts, and in less than 10 months, the company completed Construction of a gas-isolated substation in cooperation with Siemens Energy until the commercial operation phase of the project.

The outbreak of the Corona pandemic since 2020, required quick solutions to the logistical and health constraints imposed by the closure, and the company participated in the completion of the bases and the installation of about 96 turbines on time and within budget, under difficult conditions.

In June 2020, the company provided medical equipment and supplies to Ras Ghareb Central Hospital in its fight against the Corona epidemic, and re-used and recycled the wooden dough used in construction, and also re-used wooden boards and boxes and donated them to a local supplier to create handmade chairs and beds for the benefit of the local community.

He said the company has also implemented wind turbines in case of need to avoid any deaths of migratory birds, and the company is also implementing sustainable environmental measures to preserve the natural resources of the site and maintain their sustainability.

·         Reduce water and diesel consumption

The company continuously works to reduce water and diesel consumption, reduce construction waste generation as well as protect the environment in implementing sound waste management, moreover, we always ensure a safe working environment for people by conducting continuous monitoring of environmental aspects and continuous measurements of air quality.

·         Marine Recyclable Blade

He pointed out that Siemens Gamesa launched in 2021 the marine recyclable blade and in 2022 the onshore recyclable blade, which is a major step towards a sustainable industry in the field of wind energy, and onshore wind farms have also reduced the physical impacts on the area surrounding the facility, so that the use of The land is for cultivation, and the impact on wildlife is very low.

He pointed out that the latest wind energy farm that it delivered in Egypt with a capacity of 250 megawatts in the West Bakr area of Ras Ghareb produces more than 1,000 gigawatt-hours, which saves about 550,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, with a total of 4 million carbon dioxide emissions. Carbon is spared annually.

·         Supporting countries in the fight against climate change

He pointed out that Siemens Gamesa's participation in the Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Summit aims to support countries in combating climate change, as the world is in the midst of an energy crisis and a climate change emergency, so we need urgent solutions to avoid a long-term shutdown of fossil fuel-based energy generation, and we must The focus is on increasing renewable energies in the global energy mix.

He stressed the need to accelerate implementation to achieve a successful and just energy transition, through partnerships between the public and private sectors, and there must be sufficient capacity to help countries, especially Egypt and Africa, achieve their climate pledges through the implementation of sustainable and renewable green energy.

·         The presence of a strong wind industry

He stressed that it is necessary to have a strong wind industry, with which governments are committed to achieve the goals set to maintain global temperature rise this century between 1.5 and 2.0 degrees Celsius, and this cannot be achieved without a clear vision on how to finance our fight against climate change, which we hope to come out with. Sharm El Sheikh summit.
