50 million euros.. European Union spend on water projects in Egypt
European Union Ambassador: We spend more than 50 million euros in water projects in Egypt.
Ambassador Christian Berger, head and ambassador of the European Union delegation, said that water problems must be dealt with more seriously, and it is necessary to educate young people on how to deal with and preserve water, pointing out that there is cooperation with Egypt in this field.
50 million euros
He added, there are more than 50 million euros spent on water projects in Egypt, in cooperation with the private sector regarding water treatment.
He explained during his speech at the Water Awareness Workshop for Youth and Media Professionals, which is organized by the Alexandria Chamber in cooperation with the European Union, that one of the causes of conflict in the world is because of water.
Water desalination
He pointed out that there is cooperation with the Alexandria Chamber to raise awareness regarding water and water desalination, stressing the importance of support and cooperation to bring about change for the sake of Egypt.
The European Union ambassador added that the population increase in Egypt will affect water, and therefore steps must be accelerated to preserve water for the continuity of life.
He emphasized that the 2030 strategy aims to focus on the importance of water and raise awareness to preserve it in cooperation with many institutions in Egypt.
population increases
He continued that Egypt will lose 20% of its water due to population increase, and therefore steps must be accelerated to conserve water for the continuity of life.
From his side, Ahmed El-Wakeel, head of the Egyptian Chamber of Commerce in Alexandria and head of the Federation of Mediterranean Chambers, said that Egypt's water requirements are increasing due to the increase in the population, especially in light of the current deficit of about 21 billion cubic meters annually of water resources.
He added that this deficit is covered mainly through the reuse of agricultural drainage either through mixing stations or the direct illegal reuse of wastewater for irrigation, which greatly negatively affects environmental health standards.
Al-Wakil stressed the need to improve living standards and expand agricultural land to ensure food security.
Solutions to water scarcity
He explained that Proper planning and integrated management of water resources in Egypt is a complex process that requires consideration of many different aspects of available water resources, water requirements of different sectors, and water quality.
The agent stated that the Egyptian government is already taking measures to prepare the country for the future. The issue of scarcity underscores the need for innovative measures to improve the use of existing resources, to create an integrated platform to coordinate investments in the water sector and to maximize the benefits of economic activities.
This is in addition to huge solar-powered water desalination projects, solar water pumping for agriculture, waste reduction, reuse and recycling.
