Data released by the United Nations showed that India has become the largest country in the world, in terms of population, overtaking China by about 3 million people.

1.428 billion

Estimates of the State of World Population Report 2023, issued by the United Nations Population Fund, today, Wednesday, April 19, 2023, indicate that the population of India has exceeded 1.428 billion, compared to 1.4257 billion for China, according to Reuters news agency.

340 million people

The data showed that the United States comes in third place by a wide margin, with an estimated population of about 340 million people, and the report indicated that the estimates depend on the information available until February 2023.

Although India and China account for more than a third of the world's estimated population of 8.045 billion, the population growth of the two Asian giants is slowing, much faster in China than in India.

Jobs for young people

The growing population will add urgency to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government to create jobs for the millions of people entering the job market as the nation moves away from agricultural jobs.

India, where half of the population is under the age of 30, is set to become the fastest growing major economy in the world in the coming years.

India's economy (which will host the G20 summit next September) is expected to reach $40 trillion in 2047.

India's economy expanded by 6.9 percent in the last financial year, making it one of the fastest growing among major countries (according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development).

Asia's third largest economy is now home to nearly a fifth of humanity - more than the combined population of Europe, Africa or the Americas.

world's population

On November 15, 2022, the world's population reached 8 billion, which is considered a milestone in the history of human development.
