In new scandals facing Intel, a Texas federal jury said Intel must pay $948.8 million to VLSI Technology LLC for infringement of VLSI's patent for computer chips.

VLSI, a patent-holding subsidiary of the private equity firm owned by SoftBank Group, argued during the six-day trial that Intel's Cascade Lake and Skylake processors infringed on its patent covering data processing improvements.

An Intel spokesperson said the company "strongly disagrees" with the ruling and plans to appeal, and that the case is an example of many cases that show the US patent system is in dire need of reform. VLSI's law firm declined to comment on the ruling.

$2.2 billion from Intel

In March, VLSI won a nearly $2.2 billion judgment from Intel in a separate trial in Texas over various chip patents, which Intel has appealed, and VLSI lost another patent-related trial against Intel the following month.

VLSI has purchased the patent in the latest trial from Dutch chipmaker NXP Semiconductors NV.

A lawyer for VLSI said at trial that Intel chips cause millions and millions of violations, as the jury awarded the company the full amount of damages it sought.

A lawyer for Intel, based in Mountain View, California, responded during the trial that the company's engineers developed its innovations independently, and that its modern microprocessors will not work with the old VLSI technology.
