During the last period, the development of the Suez Canal has appeared remarkably in the world as the best waterway, which increases the importance and weight of the Egyptian economy globally.
The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics revealed that the value of Suez Canal revenues amounted to $50.9 billion over the past 10 years.
According to the agency’s report, the channel’s revenues amounted to $5.36 billion in 2014/2015, a decrease of 0.1%, $5.1 billion in 2015/2016, a decrease of 4.5%, and $4.9 billion in 2016/2017, a decrease of 3.4%. It increased to $5.7 billion in 2017/2018, an increase of 15.4%.
Ships transiting the Suez Canal
The number of ships transiting the Suez Canal reached 186.9 thousand ships during the past 10 years:
- 16.6 thousand ships in 2013.
- 17.1 thousand ships in 2014.
- Increase of 3.3%, and 17.5 thousand ships in 2015
- Increase of 2%. 16.8 thousand vessels in 2016
- A decrease of 3.7%, 17.6 thousand vessels in 2017
- Increase of 4.3%, 18.2 thousand vessels in 2018.
- Increase of 3.6%, and 18.9 thousand vessels in 2019.
- Revenues amounted to about $5.7 billion in 2018/2019, with an increase of 0.4%.
- The revenues amounted to about $5.8 billion in 2019/2020, an increase of 1.3%.
- revenues amounted to about $5.9 billion in 2020/2021, an increase of 1.8%.
Economic Zone
Today, the General Authority for the Economic Zone of the Suez Canal announced the success of the first supply operation of a general cargo ship in East Port Said port.
Thus, the provisioning service for vessels transiting the Suez Canal enters into force for the first time in the ports of the economic zone.
Hard currency
Ships' passage fees in the Suez Canal are considered a source of national income and the provision of hard currency, and the Suez Canal is considered the most important sea passage in the world witnessing great development through the severe era and its strategic importance, and the imposition of these fees is a natural procedure.

Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, stressed the keenness of the Suez Canal to improve the level of maritime and logistical services provided to transit ships by adopting a comprehensive strategy for development based on four main axes, including the development of the canal's navigational course and the modernization of the maritime fleet, in addition to maximizing the use of the authority's assets and diversifying sources of income.
