Investments in hydrogen

The French company ENGIE is working on investments worth 44 billion dirhams in energy, water desalination and green hydrogen projects in the UAE.

The UAE has allocated billions of dollars to expand investments in green hydrogen, one of the most important zero-emission energy sources. The UAE, which will host the 28th World Cup this year, is also working to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

$190 billion in the UAE Energy Strategy 2050

In 2017, the UAE launched the State Energy Strategy 2050, which is the first unified energy strategy in the country based on supply and demand, according to the UAE Ministry of Environment website.

The strategy aims to increase the share of clean energy in the total energy mix from 25% to 50% by 2050, reduce the carbon footprint of electricity generation by 70%, and then save 700 billion dirhams ($190.63 billion) by 2050. It also seeks to increase energy efficiency. Energy consumption by individuals and companies by 40%.

The most prominent green hydrogen projects in the UAE

One of the UAE's most important initiatives to produce green hydrogen was the inauguration of the first project of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region in the Emirate of Dubai to produce green hydrogen, by building a plant on an area of 10,000 square meters, to be able to accommodate future applications and testing platforms for various uses of hydrogen. According to Al-Bayan newspaper, in November 2022.

This facility is located in the external testing facilities of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) Center for Research and Development, which will generate 5,000 megawatts of clean energy by 2030. The solar energy generated by the complex will also power the green hydrogen project, and it is expected to produce 20.5 kilograms of hydrogen per year. The time is approximately when operating at its maximum capacity of 1.25 MW.

The UAE is attracting billions of investments in hydrogen

The French company ENGIE is working on investments in energy, water desalination and green hydrogen projects in the UAE, amounting to 44 billion dirhams (12 billion US dollars), according to the energy website, on May 27, 2023.

In the same context, the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, the Emirati Masdar, aims to reach an annual green hydrogen production capacity of one million tons by 2030, in addition to its previous goal of reaching 100 gigawatts of renewable energy within its local and international projects by the end of the current decade, according to the company’s statement on December 8. 2022.

Clean fuel with zero emissions

In this regard, ADNOC is one of the leading companies in the production of clean hydrogen, and it plays a key role in enabling the UAE's ambitious plans to become a major supplier of hydrogen to major global markets.

ADNOC is also a shareholder in the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), which owns clean energy projects with a production capacity of about 20 gigawatts, and aims to reach at least 100 gigawatts of renewable energy and up to one million tons of green hydrogen production by 2030.
